Here at The Salty Stitcher Quilt Company, I offer longarm quilting services on my HandiQuilter Infinity equipped with the Prostitcher computerized system. I offer hundreds of all-over (edge-to-edge) quilting patterns and the ability to customize patterns to your specific quilt.

Square Inch Price

I charge 2.5 cents per square inch for designs that are relatively loose.

Example: A quilt top is 60 inches x 80 inches. 60 x 80 = 4800 x .025 = $120.

For a medium density design I charge 2.75 cents per square inch.

Example:  A quilt top is 60 inches x 80 inches. 60 x 80 = 4800 x .0275 = $132.

For a dense or very intricate designs, design I charge 3 cents per square inch.

Example:  A quilt top is 60 inches x 80 inches. 60 x 80 = 4800 x .03 = $144.

Please see the "Available Designs" page for pricing.  All designs can be resized to make them more loose or more dense than they currently are.  If you see a design that you would like modified to be less or more dense, let me know and I can modify it for you.  I will let you know what pricepoint it comes out to before we commit.

My minimum quilting charge is $50. This means that a small quilt or table runner's square inch price will be rounded up to the $50 minimum.  If you have two or more table runners/small quilts that can be loaded on the same piece of backing fabric and uses the same pantograph, it can be charged as one larger quilt.

Backing Fabric

The backing fabric must be 8 inches larger than the quilt top in length and width.
The backing fabric should be squared-up and pressed. It may be a wide backing fabric, or it may be a pieced backing.  When piecing your backing keep in mind that a horizontal seam is preferred (if at all possible) for the longarm machine, as opposed to a vertical seam. All selvedges should be removed from the seams of the pieced backing. Press the seams open or in one direction. It reduces the risk of puckers on the back of the quilt.  If the backing has multiple seams in both directions, I will do my best to avoid any puckers.  Quilts are loaded from the top and it is unlikely, due to draw-up, that your seam will be centered on the finished quilt back. The position of patterns, blocks, designs or borders on the backing cannot be predicted.

Batting

You can provide batting, or purchase batting from me. If you provide the batting, it should be 8"+ larger than the top in both length and width.  I use and stock Quilters Dream batting in 100% cotton, 80/20 cotton/poly blend and in 100% poly.

Batting is a separate charge and is NOT included in the square inch price.

I charge for batting by the linear inch except in the case of special orders.  I will use only what is needed for your quilt (smallest side + a 8" margin) and charge per inch.

For example, if you have a 60" x 80" quilt, I would cut 68" of the batting of your choice.
68" of 100% cotton deluxe loft @ $0.43/in = $29.24
68" of 80/20 cotton/poly blend @ $0.34/in = $23.12
68" of 100% poly @ $0.30/in = $20.40

Thread

I stock Superior Threads OMNI, OMNI-V, King Tut, and So Fine. I don't charge extra fees for OMNI thread.   OMNI-V is an additional $8 per quilt.  King Tut is an additional $10 per quilt.  So Fine is an additional $7 per quilt.

When choosing a thread color, I aim for the color that is the best balance of being subtle and evenly visible across all the different fabrics in the quilt top.  But this is YOUR quilt! Let me know if you have a preference on thread color.

You can view my available thread colors here.

Shipping

Shipping your top and backing to me: I live in Milton, FL, USA, and would be happy to receive your top and backing by mail. Please fold top and bottom of quilts separately.  Please do not send quilts sandwiched!  I'd recommend sending your materials enclosed in a plastic sack or bag to protect against possible moisture in transit and then placed in a hard-sided cardboard box. Please do not package your quilt in scented trash bags!  Make sure the box is securely taped and labeled clearly.

Return shipping: I will send your quilt back to you in the manner described above via USPS Priority mail (using flat rate when possible/economical). Priority mail comes with $50 of insurance and a tracking number but please indicate on your intake form if you would like me to buy any additional insurance on your behalf. It's a great idea to insure your valuables against loss or damage while with the Postal Service, but I don't require it.

Other Costs

As mentioned above, batting is not included in the square inch price. I'm required by the State of Florida to collect a 7% sales tax on both the quilting service and the batting sale portion of an invoice.  Shipping and any design/pantograph fees are not subject to sales tax.

If backing is not large enough and I have to attach leaders, a fee of $15.00 per leader, no exceptions, will be added. I will not load a quilt on the machine if the backing is not large enough! I always want the best outcome for your quilt.

Occasionally, people ask me to assemble backs or fix borders. These are services that I can perform for a fee. Please note that all of these services are optional.

  • Backing assembly is $10 for a single seam assembly (less than 30 minutes) and $25 an hour for complex back assemblies (greater than 30 minutes).

  • Centering a quilt on a back is $20. This is a complex process and is not guaranteed to be perfectly aligned.

  • Quilt preparation (fixing borders, pressing seams, trimming excessive threads) is $25 an hour with a minimum 1 hour charge.

Note: It is your responsibility to ensure that your quilt is square and flat. If your quilt is not square and flat it can lead to tucks in the quilting or needle breaks over thick seams. I will do everything in my power to prevent these things from happening, but there are some things that fall outside my control. I am happy to give advice on how to avoid these problems. Please contact me for more details.
